Tonight, the Champions League play-off round kicks off its first legs. For eight clubs across four ties, it's the last step before the league phase of the richest competition in football — and it also carries real weight for their countries' UEFA coefficient.

- NEC Nijmegen – Bodø/Glimt
- Slovan Bratislava – Celje

Millions at stake
Reaching the league phase guarantees each winner a base fee of €18.62 million. The loser doesn't walk away empty-handed either.
A club eliminated in the Champions League play-off round receives €4.29 million, then drops into the Europa League league phase, which carries its own guaranteed base fee of €4.31 million. In total, the losing club still walks away with at least €8.6 million from two separate pots. Exact figures for the 2026/27 season are in UEFA's financial distribution overview.
The financial gap between winning and losing is significant. But the picture gets even more interesting from a national coefficient angle.
One promotion = at least six bonus points
A club that reaches the Champions League league phase earns at least six bonus points toward its own club coefficient — and its country's coefficient at the same time. That's the guaranteed floor for a league-phase finish (a better final ranking brings even more points). The rule is set out in Annex D.5 of the Champions League regulations.
Tonight's four ties therefore represent at least 24 bonus points up for grabs between the winning clubs' countries — and possibly more, depending on how those clubs go on to perform in the league phase itself.

It's not just about the promotion bonus, either — the qualifying and play-off results themselves already count toward the coefficient. In qualifying and play-off matches, a win is worth 1 point and a draw 0.5 points (half the value of a league-phase match), per Annex D.3 of the Champions League regulations. These points are then divided by the number of clubs each country entered.
Tonight could bring not just big results for eight clubs, but the first real movement in the coefficient tables too.
